“A strong Friends Group focused on the entirety of the park would be a transformative step in making Anacostia Park a model urban park that improves people’s lives and protects the quality and resiliency of the Anacostia River ecosystem.”

What We DO

As the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, we preserve the land and water, improve the visitor experience and ensure that the community owns the redevelopment effort in Anacostia Park.

Anacostia Park is one of DC’s largest green spaces, spanning 1,100 acres along the dynamic ecosystem that is the Anacostia River. Anacostia Park is also one of the only national parks in the country with a skating pavilion, making it a hub for recreation and community kinship.

For over 100 years, Anacostia Park has been the literal and figurative “backyard” for neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River that have endured decades of disinvestment and institutional neglect. The natural environment of the park and the residential areas of Wards 7 and 8 are connected, so uplifting Anacostia Park means uplifting the residents that frequent the Park. Working in close partnership with the National Park Service, we fundraise for improvements to the natural and built environment while creating culturally-relevant programming that connects residents to the Park.

We are people for the Park—and a park for the People.
